There are no membership fees.

The James Library is one of the few independent libraries in Southeastern Massachusetts offering 21st century books in an 19th century atmosphere.

You do not need to be a Norwell resident to use the library.

Do I need a library card?

We do not issue cards. To take out a book, sign up at the library desk and your information will be put into our patron database.

James Library Children's room

Classics - Bestsellers - Hard to find mysteries

The Collection

The James Library has approximately 10,000 books - primarily fiction for adults and children. A wide variety of current fiction and non-fiction is available as well as specialized collections of garden books, Norwell and North River history, local authors and mysteries. The library purchases a selection of current best-selling books and holds can be placed by calling 781.659-7100 or emailing the library at jameslibrary@verizon.net.

The children's collection, which includes picture books, early readers, and fiction chapter books, provides a comfortable setting for small children and their caregivers to spend time with books.

Some Highlights

  • The “go to area” in the library is the popular section of current best-selling books.
  • A local authors section.
  • A family - friendly children’s area.
  • Local genealogical resources, including Massachusetts Vital Records up to 1850 for over 100 Massachusetts towns, and New England marriages prior to 1700 (with maiden names not easily available elsewhere).
  • A local history collection featuring the history of the North River.
  • The Caroline Judd Collection of garden books, supported by the North River Gardeners
  • We also offer story times for children, a book club, a monthly poetry gathering and free wireless internet service.
